São João Batista Fort and Esposende Lighthouse
Famous in the region for its history and stone structure, the construction of São João Batista Fort began in the 17th century, during the reign of King Pedro II. Its mission was to defend and safeguard the Portuguese coast, protecting the entrance to the Cávado River. The Lighthouse Tower that constitutes this fortress is, today, one of the few metallic towers that exist in Portugal. In 2020, the Municipality of Esposende acquired, for a period of 50 years, São João Batista Fort, with the aim of rehabilitating this space for the promotion of cultural heritage. It is undoubtedly a place full of history that you cannot miss.
